Building a Better Off-Road Beast

The Colorado is a leading midsize pickup truck that provides drivers with solid performance and great standard features. The current generation was introduced in 2023 and came with an array of things that Jonesville truck enthusiasts are sure to love. Its standard crew cab gives you space for up to five passengers, allowing everyone to ride in comfort. By standardizing this feature, you no longer have to pay extra for it. It also features a standard 5.2 ft payload bed that is roomy enough to fit up to 41.9 cu.ft. of cargo. This gives you the utility you need for your job or personal use.

Chevy also decided to improve the truck’s performance when it first introduced the latest generation, giving drivers an impressive engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2.7-liter Turbo I-4 delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. This is the same engine featured on the larger Silverado 1500. In fact, the TurboMax engine can allow the Colorado to tow up to 7,700 lbs. This is why Chevy has decided to feature the TurboMax engine on all trims of the 2025 Colorado.

In 2024, the design team responsible for the Colorado chose to take things to a new level. So, they teamed up with AEV, taking the more advanced off-road ZR2 trim, and kicked things up a notch. The result is the ZR2 Bison, and this is the one to choose for your next adventure in and around Jonesville.

Sharing Some of the Same Qualities as the ZR2

The 2025 Chevy Colorado ZR2 has an exceptional array of standard equipment. This includes the TurboMax engine, which can propel the Colorado ZR2 from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds. That speed and acceleration can come in handy on and off the road when you need to get out of a tight jam.

There is a standard 4X4 drivetrain on the Colorado ZR2 that adds traction and stability. The ZR2’s transfer case does an excellent job of efficiently giving the right amount of horsepower to each of the wheels, allowing them to turn independently, giving you the traction you need in wet terrain. This is assisted by the OD MT tires that are standard on the Colorado ZR2, with the MT standing for “mud terrain.”

The drivetrain has five selectable drive modes with an off-road performance display on the truck’s dashboard. Included is an Off-Road mode that provides improved traction in mud, grass, and gravel, as well as a terrain mode for hill climbing situations. The Terrain mode also has an automatic braking feature, so you can focus on steering during ascent and descent while the system handles the brakes. Still, the coolest of the modes may be Baja, which is only offered on the ZR2 and the ZR2 Bison. This provides exceptional stability and traction when driving in dunes and other sandy conditions, making it ideal for some of the river banks around Jonesville.

In addition, Chevy has given the Colorado ZR2 a three-inch factory lift on the high-performance suspension system. This improves the ground clearance, as well as the approach angle, breakover angle, and departure angle. You will need all of this when challenging the most difficult off-road trails. The Multimatic DSSV dampers in the ZR2’s suspension system will cushion you and your passengers, while the skid plates shield the vital parts in the Colorado’s undercarriage.

Taking the ZR2’s Off-Road Prowess to New, Exciting Heights

When Chevy approached AEV to work on the ZR2 Bison, it wanted a truck that could outperform the exceptional Colorado ZR2. This was no easy task. With all of the standard equipment on the Colorado ZR2, it was already one of the best off-road models in its midsize pickup truck class. Clearly, Chevy and AEV had their work cut out for them.

The result is the ZR2 Bison, which was introduced to the Colorado lineup in 2024. Somehow, Chevy and AEV did it, hitting the ball out of the park. They kept all the things Jonesville drivers love about the Colorado ZR2 and boosted other features to give you a truck unlike any other on and off the road.

The ZR2 Bison has taken the 17-inch wheels on the ZR2 and added a beadlock feature. This will help you underinflate them for even better traction in off-road conditions without risking damaging the tires. The tires are also larger, going from 33 inches to astounding 35-inch OD MT tires, the largest standard tires on any midsize pickup truck. The factory lift has also been improved to 4.5 inches, giving the ZR2 Bison 12.2 inches of ground clearance.

Some of the improvements can be seen with the naked eye. The front and rear bumpers are heavy-duty and feature the AEV logo, which will give your truck better protection. There is also a bed-mounted spare tire carrier, so you have easy access to it if you are out running the trail when you suddenly need to change a flat.

Many of the other improvements on the ZR2 Bison are hidden from view but are there to enhance the Colorado ZR2. The off-road suspension system also has Multimatic DSSV dampers, but the ZR2 Bison adds front and rear jounce control dampers. This makes the Colorado ZR2 Bison the first midsize pickup truck to feature this, which will manage the impact when the truck’s suspension reaches full compression. As a result, you will have fewer harsh impacts on this truck. The set of five Boron steel skid plates gives the Colorado ZR2 Bison the best-in-class underbody protection. This will give you peace of mind that rocks, logs, or other debris won’t damage the oil pan, transfer case, crank case, or other critical systems on your truck.

Chevy and AEV haven’t neglected the design features that folks in Jonesville are sure to love. The floor liners and head restraints inside the truck feature the AEV logo, and there are plenty of Bison and AEV branding around the outside of the truck to let all know that a very special truck is now in their midst.
