There seems to be a new crossover SUV debuting every year. Every manufacturer is eager to sell whatever new version of their hot crossover SUV they’ve been developing over the past few years, and customers are just itching to get their hands on the newest one to see what it offers. Few, however, can beat the Chevy Equinox––a longtime favorite of solo commuters and families alike. In fact, since it first hit the market in 2004, the Equinox has been a consistent bestseller for Chevy thanks to its gorgeous looks, spacious interior, innovative technology, and smooth handling. The 2024 model year has carried on a few great features to edge out the competition, such as Teen Driver Technology, making the Equinox an especially smart purchase for any family with a teenager who will soon be behind the wheel.
However, to truly understand why we’re ecstatic to have the Chevy Equinox for sale and why so many of our customers love it, it’s a good idea to compare it to a competitor: the Ford Escape, another crossover SUV that has been climbing up the ranks of the crossover market. We’re going to put the 2024 Chevy Equinox side by side with the 2024 Ford Escape to see how the Equinox overcomes its opponent in numerous categories. That’s not to say the Escape is a lousy vehicle; it’s actually one of the better crossovers out there. It’s just not quite as good as the Equinox. Are we biased? You decide!
Taking a Glance at the Cargo Space
If you’re getting a crossover SUV, you almost certainly want to know that it has plenty of cargo space. When you’re going down to New Orleans or hiking in one of the many wildlife refuges along the coast, you want to know you can load up your crossover with whatever you need for your next trek. The last thing you want is to find out your final piece of luggage can’t quite fit.
The Equinox and the Escape offer around the same cargo space when you place the rear seats down: just over 60 cu.ft. You can fit quite a lot of suitcases into your crossover without an issue. The cargo areas of both are nicely designed, too. However, the Escape has a bit more plastic paneling in its interior than many customers desire, which can give it a less glamorous interior look than the Equinox. Most notable, though, is that even though both crossovers offer about the same cargo volume, along with the rear interior being a bit classier in the Equinox, the starting price of the Equinox is lower than the Escape’s. From an economic perspective, the Equinox is clearly the better purchase. You’ll be getting cargo volume at a nicer-looking discount compared to other crossovers in this class.

Some Seriously Smart Technology
One of the most exciting parts about owning a new vehicle is checking out what fancy tech is installed inside your new ride. Even small touches can be fun. Both the Equinox and the Escape have some outstanding tech, but there’s a reason the Equinox ends up a step above the others. But we’ll get to that shortly.
The Equinox and the Escape both come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which let you sync your device directly to the touch screen. This way, you can listen to your rock and roll playlist and favorite podcasts no matter where you’re traveling in Louisiana. We’ll admit that the standard touch screen in the Escape is a little larger than the one in the Equinox (seven inches versus eight inches), but the Equinox comes equipped with the MyLink infotainment interface. This interface is fantastic for anyone who is not too tech-savvy and has concerns about managing apps and programs in their crossover SUV. Both the Equinox and the Escape have absolutely top-tier safety systems, so you’re driving with the knowledge that your crossover will act as a loyal co-pilot.
Now, you might think that since both crossovers have similar tech, the Equinox wins out due to a lower starting price. While it’s undoubtedly true, one more element comes into play: Teen Driver Technology. The Equinox comes standard with this fantastic program that will be a true boon to parents of teenagers. If you have a child that will soon be taking the wheel of a car, then Chevy’s Teen Driver Technology will be a real gift. While other parents will be stressing about their new driver, you’ll know your Equinox has your back.
So, what does Teen Driver Technology do? It both writes a report card on how the drive went and can set limits on what your novice driver can do behind the wheel. For instance, if safety systems kicked in during the drive, the report card will let you know, so that you can address with your child what occurred when they were out. You can also set limits on top speed and how high the audio can go to prevent distractions. Young people, after all, love to play music at a high volume. Nothing wrong with that usually, but you don’t want them unable to hear sirens or car horns.
Thanks to Teen Driver Technology, the Equinox beats out the Escape, and we’d argue that this tech alone makes the Equinox king. Many times, it’s families who invest in a crossover, and the Equinox’s upgrade makes sure that when their children become drivers, they’ll be able to rest easy.

How About the Engine?
Deciding which crossover’s engine reigns supreme is not as easy as it looks. The standard option for the Escape is a turbo-charged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, while the Equinox starts with a turbo-charged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The extra cylinder gives you better performance, which, combined with the lower starting price, gives the Equinox a clear advantage.
However, you can upgrade the Escape to a more powerful engine. The issue? This happens on higher trims, which means you’re paying more than the standard sticker price, which is already higher than the Equinox’s. From the perspective of your wallet, it’s clear that the Equinox wins out, to say nothing of Equinox’s respectable fuel efficiency, which eases the strain on your wallet even more. You can instead spend that extra cash on something you’ve been dreaming of or invest it for retirement.
