Empowered Engines

One of the key features people keep in mind when considering a truck is the sort of power and performance it has. Depending on what you plan to use your truck for, the engine and its output matter. The Silverado 1500 is fitted with several engine options that range in power depending on the trim you choose.

Starting out, the first few trims are equipped with the TurboMax engine, which received a new name for the new year. Previously called the “High-Output I-4,” this engine is more than sufficient for everyday needs. The TurboMax produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, which is enough get-up-and-go for the average driver. The TurboMax is the only one of the engines on this year’s Silverado 1500 to be mated with an eight-speed transmission, but like the rest of its kin, the TurboMax can be adapted to either two- or four-wheel drive.

The WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss are the trims that sport this bad boy block, making the TurboMax less like an entry-level option and much more like the dependable, do-it-all engine it really is. Although some of these trims offer optional engine upgrades, it is unnecessary unless you have some heavy work in your future.

The LTZ is the first trim in the lineup to sport a different engine as standard, rolling in with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8. Paired with a ten-speed transmission and designed to give you the best design and performance, the LTZ seems to be the whole package. With a slight bump in power but a drop in torque, the LTZ puts heavy lifting aside and focuses a bit more on speedy performance. The High Country trim also comes standard with this particular V8, producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.

The ZR2 is the last of the trim lineup and the only option to come standard with a diesel. The powerful and impressive 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine comes in with the lowest power output, at 305 hp, but the highest torque at 495 lb-ft. Mated to the ten-speed, the Duramax gives power a good name, particularly at low speeds. Whatever your needs are, you will find an engine ready to tackle them.

Power Transfer

All of the Chevy Silverado 1500 trims can be equipped with four-wheel drive, changing the name of the game. With the option to better utilize the power sent to all four wheels, drivers enjoy improved performance and safety. To direct and control the torque, each trim is equipped with the necessary tools, like the single-speed transfer case found on the WT, LTZ, LT, RST, and Custom trims.

The single-speed transfer case offers three Transfer Case modes: 2WD HI mode, 4WD Auto mode, and 4WD HI mode. 2WD HI mode puts the Silverado 1500 into two-wheel drive, optimizing fuel efficiency for everyday driving. If the road is smooth, then why not save on fuel and enjoy the ride? To start truly utilizing the capabilities of your Silverado 1500, use 4WD Auto; this puts the Chevy into a full-time AWD that reacts and responds to outside influences such as driver input and road conditions. Tackling wet or icy roads is just one benefit of 4WD Auto, with light off-roading being another. For heavier off-road options, the Silverado 1500 can be set to 4WD HI, which keeps torque high for terrain such as sand and snow. 4WD HI can also be set to Terrain mode, which optimizes for rough off-road terrain.

The Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss, High Country, and ZR2 trim options change up the modes a bit thanks to the two-speed Autotrac Transfer Case. In addition to the modes available with the single-speed, the two-speed also offers 4WD LO mode, which refocuses traction to climb obstacles or take on steep declines with improved control. Not just great for steep obstacles, this mode can also work in deep sand or snow. Neutral is another option, used specifically for towing and rounding out the driving capabilities of these trims.

Control Your Ride

The transfer case isn’t the only thing making your traction work for you. Depending on the trim, specialized differentials help direct traction to where you need it the most. The WT and Custom are left out of the mix, with all but one of the remaining trims sporting an automatic locking rear differential. The Eaton Locker can detect changes in wheel speed, which then triggers the rear wheels to lock, causing them to turn in unison for improved grip.

The ZR2 trim takes it up a notch with a driver-selectable full-locking front differential and a driver-selectable full-locking rear differential. The only trim to come standard with this type of differential, the ZR2 lets the driver decide how to control torque. The driver can lock both rear wheels or both front wheels, making off-road adventures a more hands-on experience.

While the differentials help direct torque, the suspension is what directs comfort and ride with the ability to absorb impacts and adapt to terrain changes. Suspension set-ups vary depending on trim, with a standard suspension package on many of these trim options. A high-capacity suspension package is another option.

If off-roading is on the menu, then you’ll want the ZR1 Suspension Package. With dynamic Multimatic DSSV dampers for improved absorption and a high-performance lifted suspension, this package is more equipped to handle the tough stuff. Trail Boss trims are also specially equipped with the Z71 suspension that also includes a two-inch factory lift. Improved ground clearance for clearing obstacles and better approach and departure angles help get the Trail Boss trims over off-road conditions. Rancho monotube shocks also help cushion bumps and bruises.

It’s What’s on the Inside (or Underneath) That Matters

The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a dynamic piece of machinery resulting from years of engineering mastery. Trucks are becoming less plain, stripped-down utilitarians and more well-rounded beasts of luxury. Inside, they are gaining comforts and conveniences once not found on trucks, but that doesn’t negate their mechanical genius. At the center, trucks are still trucks, meeting the demand for a vehicle that can do more than just hit the highway.

With options like front- or all-wheel drive and off-road or standard suspension, each trim of the Silverado 1500 shows off a variation of capability often only found in trucks or sport utility vehicles. These unique capabilities are what set trucks apart, and with different Silverado 1500 trims, your particular pickup will surely be set apart from the rest. Determining which features matter the most and which trim offers those features is the first step to finding the truck of your dreams.
